Leola, Pennsylvania - October 15, 2014: Joanne and Joe Griffiths sit on her therapy bed in what used to be their downstairs living room. Joanne Griffiths, 64, suffered a stroke two years ago, and her husband Joseph Griffiths, 65, became her primary care-giver. She can now walk, with the assistance of her cane, and talk at a normal volume. The doctors, nurses, and physical therapists who helped Joanne get better, also advised Joe how to best care for his wife of 41 years at home. Next year AARP will help push for the passage of the Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act. The CARE Act would require hospitals and rehab centers to identify caregivers and give them in-person instructions for medical tasks such as injections, wound care and transfers so they can confidently perform them at home.
