His mother, Wendy Shaia, the Executive Director of Social Work Community Outreach Service at the University of Maryland tried getting a autism diagnosis for John when he was two, but was repeatedly dismissed or misdiagnosed until he was 10.
Autism, once thought to be a condition for wealthy white people, has a long history of diagnosis prejudice for poor and minority children.
