There are a number of increasingly sophisticated, commercially available mobile safety applications being used in higher ed to bolster communication and emergency response. They arrive amid a national conversation about safety on college campuses that has extended to the White House. The technology stretches beyond mass alerting systems, that were made law after the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting and facilitate emergency notifications by email, text message, and loudspeaker, among other mediums.
