Kathleen Busch, from the Locust Point neighborhood of Baltimore, switches driver's seats with Kent Island Express driver Robert Dwyer, background, after crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in heavy eastbound Memorial Day traffic Friday, May 24, 2013. Busch, who is heading to her and her husband's retirement home in Selbyville, DE, first developed her fear of driving on bridges and through tunnels when she younger -- witnessing a severe accident in a tunnel "two car-lengths away" from her. Seeing the accident and feeling trapped resulting in an anxiety attack. She has no problems crossing the bridge, but she doesn't like driving knowing there is no pull off area.
Long-time waterman Dwight Marshall, seen on his dock, is part of the diminishing population of crabbers and oystermen who once enjoyed a fruitful career harvesting the Chesapeake bay. Watermen like Marshall are often blamed for "over fishing" the Chesapeake, while scientific studies show the watershed's lack of oxygen is largely due to nutrient pollution and run-off, which increases oxygen-hungry algae and suffocates the crabs and oysters. So, in an effort to help boost the diminishing economy along the Chesapeake Bay, the Maryland State Legislature is considering naming the multi-layered Smith Island Cake, which Marshall's wife Mary Ada sells, the State Desert.

 • Annapolis, Maryland - June 05, 2016: A pirate flag from the Pirate Adventures on the Chesapeake ship is reflected in water pooled atop the sidewalk at the end of Third Street in Annapolis Sunday morning June 5th, 2016.

A perigean spring tide brings nuisance flooding to Annapolis, Md. These phenomena -- colloquially know as a "King Tides" -- happen three to four times a year and create the highest tides for coastal areas, except when storms aren't a factor. Annapolis is extremely susceptible to nuisance flooding anyway, but the amount of nuisance flooding has skyrocketed in the last ten years. Scientists point to climate change for this uptick.
Mary Ada Marshall knits a baby garment in her living room. She has a grandchild on the way. Marshall and other women from Smith Island are helping boost the diminishing local economy -- which has traditionally depended on the male dominant crabbing and oyster harvesting along the Chesapeake Bay -- by selling the traditional multi-layered Smith Island cakes. Ruth Evans, right, is a long-time resident of Smith Island. Her neighbor, Mary Ada Marshall, not at the scene, estimates their small corner of the island has seen about 100 residents leave in recent years, either by moving or by dying. The young people are moving away, and the island is repopulating by what Evans colloquially and jokingly calls,"farners," or foreigners -- seasonal residents like Jack Romesburg, a salesman from Somerset, Pennsylvania, seen riding his bike in the background. Evans and Romesburg have a friendly relationship.
