• To become the top swimmer in the world Michael Phelps had to make sacrifices. An undeveloped social life left the Olympian somewhat one-dimensional. After Beijing, Phelps was encouraged to decompress and explore the life of a normal twenty-something. After photos emerged of Phelps smoking marijuana at a private party in South Carolina, he endured the kind of public scorn felt by very few 23-year-olds. A newfound interest in golf and business investments are adding to Phelps's life experiences, but the most important thing for him right now is to train for London in 2012..

Molossia's Flag Day is September 9th! The day celebrates the first day the Molossian flag flew over the sovereign territory in 1998. Molossia’s flag is called The Grand Triune. The blue bar symbolizes strength and the desert sky. The white symbolizes purity and the mountains that surround Molossia, and the green symbolizes Prosperity and the Molossian landscape, “green after a spring rain,” …and maybe an intense summer watering.
I know what you're wondering. Who stitches his flag together? Well, here's a quote from the “How to Start Your Own Nation” website, which Baugh authored: “I chose my nation's flag from among those that already exist, in this case Sierra Leone, and then turned it upside down. I did this so that I would have a real flag to fly outside when ever I wish, without having to sew one from scratch.” Clever man, that President!

2014 is the 200th anniversary of Francis Scott Key's Star Spangled Banner. He wrote the poem while on a British ship during the battle of Baltimore in the war of 1812. On the eve of the Fourth of July, we use this anniversary to talk about the meaning of the national anthem in 2014 as the nation winds down the second of two unpopular wars amid fears that much of the Middle East is being lost to bloodthirsty terrorist groups. -- Photo by Matt Roth, Freelance

  • (staff photo by Matt Roth)..Edith Schultz, from Halethorpe, spent most of her adult life celebrating Veterans Day with her husband Dick Schultz. It doubles as their anniversary. Dick, a World War II veteran, passed away two years ago, on 9/11, of all days. Veterans Day, 2009, Edith sits with her cup of coffee and a few lottery tickets at Paul's Diner in downtown Arbutus. Afterwards she drives to Loudon Park Cemetary and erects two small American flags, one in front of her late husband's grave and one in front of her father's grave. .Like many elderly in the southern Baltimore County area, Edith is planning to sell her home, and auction most of her belongings, including many of her husband's paintings. She needs the money so she can move into Charlestown, the mega-retirement community in Catonsville. Many of her friends already live there.

  • Everett, Washington - July 13, 2015: Dressed in their naval dress uniforms Prince Aaron, left, and King Adam I, right, raise the Überstadt flag on the HMNS (His Magesty's Naval Ship) Bert George at the Port of Everett Marina before venturing into the Possession Sound (part of the Puget Sound). This will be the first time their micronation's flag will fly on The Bert George.

The Bert George is named for the Oberstadt brothers’ grandfather. The crown jewel of the Überstadt navy is captained by their father, High Chancellor Michael Oberstadt, not pictured. The High Chancellor does not wear Überstadti regalia.

The Kingdom of Überstadt is led by nineteen-year-old King Adam I, (Adam Oberstadt). The Barony of Rosewood -- the micronation's capitol and the Oberstadt family home -- is nestled in the Seattle suburb of Mountlake Terrace, Wash.
Überstadt also claims territory of nearby Edmount Island on Lake Ballinger -- called The Barony of Ballinger and "considered the spiritual homeland of the nation." Both baronies reside within the Duchy of Edmount which "is situated entirely within the boundaries of the city of Mountlake Terrace, Washington," according to the Überstadt website.
Überstadt was founded by King Adam I and his high school friends March 6, 2010, and was governed by judges as a kritarchy. Before taking the crown, Adam was Überstadt's chief judge. After graduation, many of the Überstadti moved away to college and Überstadt's populace shrank. Activities would shift from the high school to Rosewood, and the governing style morphed to a unitary constitutional monarchy. According to the micronation's website Überstadt is a sovereign state "guided by the principles of direct democracy, socialist economics, and environmentalism."
• Annapolis, Maryland - June 05, 2016: A pirate flag from the Pirate Adventures on the Chesapeake ship is reflected in water pooled atop the sidewalk at the end of Third Street in Annapolis Sunday morning June 5th, 2016.

A perigean spring tide brings nuisance flooding to Annapolis, Md. These phenomena -- colloquially know as a "King Tides" -- happen three to four times a year and create the highest tides for coastal areas, except when storms aren't a factor. Annapolis is extremely susceptible to nuisance flooding anyway, but the amount of nuisance flooding has skyrocketed in the last ten years. Scientists point to climate change for this uptick.
• Mountlake Terrace, Washington - July 13, 2015: Prince Aaron and King Adam I of Überstadt stand for a portrait in their camouflage BDU's on the shore of Lake Ballinger before voyaging to Edmount Island, which is "considered the spiritual homeland of the nation." After rowing as close to the peat island as they can, the Oberstadt brothers will enact "their first official Mark of Überstadt's sovereignty" tossing a small paper laminated flag onto the island.

After the great BBQ fire of 2009, setting foot on the island has been deemed illegal by the local authorities. The fire is considered to be the event that solidified the early Überstadtis.

Janet Marie Smith is the Oriole's new vice president of Planning and Development. Her design mantra embraces the quirks of the ball park's surroundings, and works to sensitively integrate it into the city's physical and cultural landscape. She was instrumental in building Camden Yards in 1992, building and transitioning Turner Field from an Olympic stadium to a home for the Braves and most recently renovating the Red Sox's Fenway Park. She has been re-recruited to the Orioles and is now tasked with improving their Spring Training facility in Florida.
