Smith Island, Maryland
Assignment ID: 30058840A

Ruth Evans, right, is a long-time resident of Smith Island. Her neighbor, Mary Ada Marshall, not at the scene, estimates their small corner of the island has seen about 100 residents leave in recent years, either by moving or by dying. The young people are moving away, and the island is repopulating by what Evans colloquially and jokingly calls,"farners," or foreigners -- seasonal residents like Jack Romesburg, a salesman from Somerset, Pennsylvania, seen riding his bike in the background. Evans and Romesburg have a friendly relationship.
In an effort to help boost the diminishing economy along the Chesapeake Bay, the Maryland State Legislature is considering naming the multi-layered Smith Island Cake the State Desert.

 • Baltimore, Maryland - June 04, 2014: People walk along West North Avenue in Baltimore City Thursday June 04, 2014. Baltimore's city council recently passed a stricter curfew for youths. Children under 14 are supposed to be home by 9pm. Children 14-16 are supposed to be home by 10pm during weekdays, and 11pm during the weekends and summer. Curfew violators will be brought to a curfew connection center, located in the Baltimore City School District's Headquarters. The bill's proponents say the curfew is aimed at keeping children safer, and not intended to criminalize curfew breakers. Critics of the bill argue the bill is a variation of "stop and frisk," allowing police to stop any young looking person without cause and the law will targeting poor, black neighborhoods, like the largely impoverished and mostly black neighborhoods surrounding West North Avenue.
