• Hollywood, California - April 10, 2015: During the tour of Hollywood, Friday, a MicroCon 2015 attendee seemingly “boops” the nose of a lion-headed medal from WestArctica on President Kevin Baugh’s “dictator jacket.” The top row of medals are #Molossian, “ones that I gave myself,” said the president.

The blue heart is the Order of the Desert Heart from Calsahara. The bottom middle is from the House of Homestead. The gold one with an eagle is also from WestArctica and the silver one with swords is from Vikesland.
Cookie Dough is probably Molossia's most valuable resource. Not only is the country's currency, the Valora, based on it's (super)market value, but it's also used in the Kokintz System to measure weight. One Fenwick is based on a large tube of Pillsbury Cookie Dough. The Norton, is the length of the President's hand (roughly 7 inches), and the Zenda is the unit of measurement for temperature, which is currently based off the height of Marilyn Monroe. Back in 2007, when the Kokintz system was first implemented, the Zenda was based on the height of Molossia's former first lady, who now lives in Texas, but Marilyn Monroe is the same height -- and lets be honest -- a funnier reference.

Here's an explanation of the names from Molossia.org: "The names for these units of measurement derive from various movies that feature fictional nations, as well as other micronational icons. The Norton is, of course, named after Emperor Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, the 'patron saint' of micronationalism. The Fenwick, and its subunit, the Bascomb, are named for the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, from the book and movie 'The Mouse That Roared'. The Simms and its subunit, the Parador, are named for the movie, 'Moon Over Parador', while the Zenda is named for the movie 'The Prisoner of Zenda'.

Molossia's Flag Day is September 9th! The day celebrates the first day the Molossian flag flew over the sovereign territory in 1998. Molossia’s flag is called The Grand Triune. The blue bar symbolizes strength and the desert sky. The white symbolizes purity and the mountains that surround Molossia, and the green symbolizes Prosperity and the Molossian landscape, “green after a spring rain,” …and maybe an intense summer watering.
I know what you're wondering. Who stitches his flag together? Well, here's a quote from the “How to Start Your Own Nation” website, which Baugh authored: “I chose my nation's flag from among those that already exist, in this case Sierra Leone, and then turned it upside down. I did this so that I would have a real flag to fly outside when ever I wish, without having to sew one from scratch.” Clever man, that President!

Any tourist who wishes to launch a rocket receives a certificate making them an honorary Molossian Space Cadet. The Space Program also launches fuel propelled rockets, but the dry desert conditions + rockets might create a fire. yikes!

This isn't the only leg of Molossian military open to non-citizens. People can attend the Molossian Naval Academy -- an online school. The higher the rank, the more intense the schooling. Unlike becoming a space cadet, rising the ranks in the Navy requires a fee.

Since citizenship is closed, President Baugh uses inclusion in the space program and the Naval Academy as a way to allow participation in his nation.
His Excellency, Kevin Baugh, President of the Republic of Molossia, waters the plants in Republic Square. His "work pants" are his old ACU (Army Combat Uniform) pants from when he was Sergeant 1st Class in the U.S. Army. He always wears those pants when he works on and improves Molossia. I remember when he told me about the pants thinking there was some kind of cool symbolism there. …but I also remember being really really thirsty and sweaty.

The Republic of Molossia's first lady Adrianne Baugh is Kevin Baugh's second wife. Similarly, his excellency is Adrianne's second husband. The president's first wife left him and moved to Texas -- which is why anything from Texas is illegal in Molossia. …except Kelly Clarkson.

If I can editorialize for a second, these two are a great couple. I got the impression Kevin's ex-wife wasn't really on board with the whole micronational thing. But Adrianne embraces it. Several times throughout the tour, I saw them canoodle, too. It was pretty cute. They're not really that new to each other, either. As of as of September 10th, 2013 XXXVI, they'll have been married for two years! Congratulations you two!!!

President Baugh sits in the Office of the President -- which he built.

When I told my Grandmother I was heading out to photograph a micronation in Nevada, she worriedly asked, "It's not one of those places with the neo-Nazi's is it?" Ha! Oh Grandmommy… Although, to Grandmommy's credit when I tell people about this place, you'd be surprised how often people assume it houses some kind of a scary separatist militia, or wonder if it's kinda like an Indian reservation.

Molossia is less separatist, and more satirist. Molossia isn't a serious place, but after 36 years of rule President Baugh is serious about Molossia's operation, laws, commerce, and declaration of sovereignty. "Almost anything a micronation does is a form of political satire," said President Baugh during our tour.

Having said that, Baugh is serious about his declaration of sovereignty. On molossia.org the country references Article 1 and 3 of the 1933 Montevideo Convention on Rights and Duties of States as well as the Charter of the United Nations, article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Baugh writes,"One of the greatest powers that a nation possesses is the right to exercise inherent sovereign authority over its members and territory."

Oh, and he's kind of a big deal in the international micronational scene, too. He helps other micronationals start up and maintain their micronations.
The Republic of Molossia is a tiny micronation surrounded by Dayton, Nevada. It's ruled by fifty-one-year-old President Kevin Baugh, middle. He is flanked by first lady Adrianne Baugh, 34, and, Molossia's Chief Constable Alexis Baugh, 9.
There are only 26 Molossians. Citizenship is closed to non-family members. …and a few dogs. That's not to say 26 people live in The Government House, a modest three bedroom ranch. In addition to these three, Adrienne's two teenage sons, and their four dogs. The resident cat and hamster aren't citizens. "Cats always have questionable loyalty, anyway," joked President Baugh in an email. Most Molossians live in the U.S., except for one of the President's sons who is in Afghanistan.

President Baugh says he gets weekly email requests for citizenship, "many from the Middle East."

Similar to how the US's currency was based on the Gold Standard, Molossia's Valora is based on the Pillsbury Cookie Dough Standard. Three Valora have equal value to one tube of Cookie Dough.
The current exchange rate of 1 Valora to 1 U.S. Dollar is $0.75.

One Valora is equal to 100 Futtrus.
Valora means "value" or "valuable" in Esperanto, the second official language of Molossia.

Side note, probably the low point of my tour was when President Baugh forbade me to photograph where the money's printed. (he was nice about it). I wish it was because I don't have the proper security clearance, or something cool like that, but it's because the printer is in his and the first lady's bathroom, and it was too "dusty." …sigh. But I totally understand not wanting a photographer to make pictures in your bathroom, too.

Yup! there's a Molossian postal system. Stamps can be used for inter-molissian mail. Outside of Molossia, they're considered Cinderella Stamps.

One of the off-season goals President Baugh has is to wire telephones in all of Molossia's buildings. He has to wait for the dry season to end to start digging, though. During tourist season the ground is too hard, and the aggressive U.S. weather which is hot hot hot! invades Molossia -- where, year round, it's 72 degrees F and sunny.

The thing I like most about this photo of the phone in the Office of the President is the mini-phone jack where he can plug in his iPhone to make calls. ha!

The Republic of Molossia is a tiny micronation surrounded by Dayton, Nevada. It's run -- nay -- RULED by fifty-one-year-old President Kevin Baugh. I spent the day at this tiny country Monday, August 12, 2013 XXXVI (the roman numeral extension signifies how long Molossia has existed, and it's how Molossians write the date).
His Excellency is flanked on the left by Molossia's first lady Adrianne Baugh, 34, and, on the left, her daughter/Kevin's step-daughter/Molossia's Chief Constable Alexis Baugh, 9.
There are only 26 Molossians. Citizenship is closed to non-family members. …and a few dogs. That's not to say 26 people live in The Government House, a modest three bedroom ranch. Nope. Just these three, Adrienne's two teenage sons, and their four dogs. The resident cat and hamster aren't citizens. "Cats always have questionable loyalty, anyway," joked President Baugh in an email. Most Molossians live in the U.S., except for one of the President's sons who is in Afghanistan.

The Republic of Molossia's Red Square houses the post office, trading company, The Office of the President, The Bank, and, of course, the Tiki Hut Bar and Grill. All the buildings were built by the hands of his Excellency. Some of the newer buildings also had the help of Chief Constable Alexis. She's an excellent side kick.
