  • (photo by Matt Roth).Friday, May 14, 2010..The boy's locker room at the Baltimore Freedom Academy is in such dangerous disrepair, students are not allowed to use it. But signs of illicit use pop up, like discarded flavored tobacco shake, seen, and human feces (not seen) on the floor. The later detail did not surprise Principal Khalilah Harris who reports the maintenance staff are tasked to clean the locker room on a weekly basis...The building housing the Baltimore Freedom Academy, a grade 6-12 Baltimore public charter school focusing in social justice, was built in 1960. Fifty years later, the school is in disrepair. Old pipes make water from the fountains undrinkable. Asbestos makes repairing/replacing the pipes a hazard. The school has no air conditioning which makes the year-round school unbearable in the summer. The most derelict area is the boys locker room, where students are not allowed.

Water is a serious issue at the fifty-year-old school building. • The eerie coincidence with the B&O no. 217 "Camel" steam engine is that the locomotive's number is the same date the blizzard of 2003 caused the roundhouse's roof to collapse, 2/17. The chipped cow catcher, seen above, and extensive damage to the cab are evidence of the collapse. Another coincidence is that the number of months it took to complete restorations, 22, is also the number of sides the polygonal shaped roundhouse has. The antiquated locomotives that were damaged in the roof collapse are staying in their disrepaired state behind plexi-glass walls as a way tell the museum's continuing history.
