  • (staff photo by Matt Roth).."I think I'm gonna throw up," said Tyler Day, right, vocalizing the nervous energy vibrating from the nearly 30 ninth and new tenth grade boys lining the second-floor hallway at Marriotts Ridge High School, Wednesday, March 4, 2009. They've had three days to show the four-coach team their skills, but the majority will not make it. "This is the part I hate," says head JV coach Craig Blum about the cut process. Twenty-nine new 9th and 10th graders tried out (28 lasted the entire three-days). "It's a numbers game," explains Blum, considering all of last years' returning freshmen -- now sophomores -- will stay on the JV squad. Unless a sophomore has shown vast improvement in skill and/or attitude from last year, they have a less likely chance of making it over a freshman. Day, a sophomore, was later cut, as was freshman Thomas Catania, middle, but freshman Jordan Szarko, left, will be wearing a Mustangs' JV jersey this Spring.

Don Lipstein sits under the weeping willow he affectionately called "his tree" at Bellevue State Park in Wilmington , Delaware on Friday, May 03, 2013. He would take his son Joshua to the park to play and fish as a child. As an adult his son joined the Navy, saw combat as a member of the Riverines. Before reenlisting a tumor was found, which caused hearing loss. After surgery he developed an addiction to pain killers, which combined a desk job he hated, and separation from his wife and newborn, led to suicide. Don, who turned 54 on the day the photos were made, now works with Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors "T.A.P.S." as a peer mentor coordinator for the suicide postvention program.

Chris Giunta is a Star Wars fanatic who hates Episode 1-3. He moved to San Fransisco from Maryland and camped out for a month to be one of the first in line to see The Phantom Menace. He even proposed to his wife before the movie started. These days he forbids his children from watching the first three films and the re-released digitally enhanced versions of the original trilogy.
