President Baugh sits in the Office of the President -- which he built.

When I told my Grandmother I was heading out to photograph a micronation in Nevada, she worriedly asked, "It's not one of those places with the neo-Nazi's is it?" Ha! Oh Grandmommy… Although, to Grandmommy's credit when I tell people about this place, you'd be surprised how often people assume it houses some kind of a scary separatist militia, or wonder if it's kinda like an Indian reservation.

Molossia is less separatist, and more satirist. Molossia isn't a serious place, but after 36 years of rule President Baugh is serious about Molossia's operation, laws, commerce, and declaration of sovereignty. "Almost anything a micronation does is a form of political satire," said President Baugh during our tour.

Having said that, Baugh is serious about his declaration of sovereignty. On molossia.org the country references Article 1 and 3 of the 1933 Montevideo Convention on Rights and Duties of States as well as the Charter of the United Nations, article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Baugh writes,"One of the greatest powers that a nation possesses is the right to exercise inherent sovereign authority over its members and territory."

Oh, and he's kind of a big deal in the international micronational scene, too. He helps other micronationals start up and maintain their micronations.
• Anaheim , California - April 11, 2015: Queen Carolyn of Ladonia -- who lives in Chicago -- became involved in the Sweden-based micronation in the late 90's while a Political Science major in college. Her satirical business case proposing why Ladonia should annex Gary Indiana earned her a minister's position. After the previous Queen was ousted, Carolyn Shelby filled the spot. In Ladonia, queens reign for life, and there are no kings. "I've survived a couple coups." The Micronation's government is a Constitutional monarchy run by 100 active ministers and have presidential elections every three years. Ladonians have claimed sovereignty over a coastal Swedish nature reserve. Needless to say Ladonia has a tepid relationship with the Swedish government, but the micronation brings 40,000 people per year to a place that hasn't had a boom in tourism for around 100 years. Ladonia's founder, political artist & sculptor Lars Vilks, created the micronation as a protest to governmental encroachment in Sweden. Ladonia stands for Freedom of speech, lower taxes, the right for its citizens not to be compelled to do things by the government, and freedom to be idle. 100 different countries are represented in its 17,000 citizens -- 6,000 of whom are from the U.S. Queen Carolyn says Ladonia offers people the chance to be a citizen in a system they weren't born in to. "...because nobody was born there. We're all immigrants."
• Anaheim , California - April 11, 2015: Grand Duke Jacob Felts, 16, from Broslavia, gives a presentation titled "Challenges to Intermicronational Trade." His solution? Form the National American InterMicronational Trade Organization, or "NAIMTO." Micronations are expensive to run points out Grand Duke Jacob, and proposes that micronations in aligned with NAIMTO sell "boring stuff" -- reusable items that people will need to repurchase. The Republic of Molossia sells Supremo Soap, and Broslovia is attempting to make recycled paper.

Broslovia is a micronation located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It's claimed province not only over Grand Duke Jacob's house, Feltasia, the capital of Broslovia, and his friend Lord Henry's house, titled New Southland, but also Pluto, the dwarf planet.

When asked if Broslavia holds elections he said his nation is an Absolute Monarchy, "I'm a libertarian, so I do enough to be a bad leader."
Distance markers of other famous Micronations are painted on a sign post in Molossia. Distance is measured in Nortons -- an homage to Emperor Norton of San Fransisco -- which is the roughly seven inches, or the length of President Baugh's hand. Royal Nortons, however, are equivalent to one mile. The sign was made before Baugh developed the Molossian system of measurement.
• Anaheim , California - April 11, 2015: Queen Anastasia Sophia Maria Helena von Rubenroth Elphberg of Ruritania, 64, has her portrait made during MicroCon 2015 at the Anaheim Central Library in California, Saturday April 11, 2015. Queen Anastasia's micronation is an Absolute Monarchy based upon Divine Right Theory. Her highness says, "when you form a Micronation, everyone wants a title and nobody wants to do anything. So I make the rules." Ruritania is based in Stone Mountain, Ga. "We believe in things like Manners, spelling ... dressing properly."
Cookie Dough is probably Molossia's most valuable resource. Not only is the country's currency, the Valora, based on it's (super)market value, but it's also used in the Kokintz System to measure weight. One Fenwick is based on a large tube of Pillsbury Cookie Dough. The Norton, is the length of the President's hand (roughly 7 inches), and the Zenda is the unit of measurement for temperature, which is currently based off the height of Marilyn Monroe. Back in 2007, when the Kokintz system was first implemented, the Zenda was based on the height of Molossia's former first lady, who now lives in Texas, but Marilyn Monroe is the same height -- and lets be honest -- a funnier reference.

Here's an explanation of the names from Molossia.org: "The names for these units of measurement derive from various movies that feature fictional nations, as well as other micronational icons. The Norton is, of course, named after Emperor Norton I, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, the 'patron saint' of micronationalism. The Fenwick, and its subunit, the Bascomb, are named for the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, from the book and movie 'The Mouse That Roared'. The Simms and its subunit, the Parador, are named for the movie, 'Moon Over Parador', while the Zenda is named for the movie 'The Prisoner of Zenda'.

The claimed territory of WestArctica is the Marie Byrd Land of Antarctica, which is 1/8th of the continent. Last year Grand Duke Travis (Travis McHenry) registered WestArctica as a non-profit. It’s mission is to bring attention to climate change's impact on Antarctica's ice sheets and advocate for the local penguin population. Grand Duke Travis founded WestArctica November 2, 2001 while he was in the Navy as an Intelligence Specialist. His advocacy work with WestArctica led him to speak with dignitaries from other countries. The Navy found out, and gave him an ultimatum. So, his work with WestArctica took a backseat until he was honorably discharged in 2008. Since then he established a second micronation, Calsahara. It's a swath of land in the high plains of the California Valley, which his ex-wife’s family owns. After Travis came out as gay, he and his wife divorced. While Travis and his ex-wife remain on good terms, according to Travis, her family is not interested in handing over their land to Travis. He did, however, name their son Nicholas, King of CalSahara, and Travis is CalSahara's "Dictator for Life."
The Republic of Molossia's first lady Adrianne Baugh is Kevin Baugh's second wife. Similarly, his excellency is Adrianne's second husband. The president's first wife left him and moved to Texas -- which is why anything from Texas is illegal in Molossia. …except Kelly Clarkson.

If I can editorialize for a second, these two are a great couple. I got the impression Kevin's ex-wife wasn't really on board with the whole micronational thing. But Adrianne embraces it. Several times throughout the tour, I saw them canoodle, too. It was pretty cute. They're not really that new to each other, either. As of as of September 10th, 2013 XXXVI, they'll have been married for two years! Congratulations you two!!!

His Excellency, Kevin Baugh, the President of Molossia works internationally -- in H.R. for the U.S. Government. He's a retired Sergeant in the U.S. Army. And the 51-year-old autocrat has a countdown app on his iPhone to let him know how much time before he retires with full benefits! People ask all the time what he does for a living. He purposefully vague about it. But one thing's for sure, running Molossia doesn't pay the bills. He told me the story about a friend of his who also worked for the U.S. government and lost his security clearance because of his micronation. It makes sense. Baugh is too close to the finish line to wanna screw up what he has.

What does he want to do after he retires? Work at a library? …maybe a gardening center? …or possibly with pets? I get the impression he won't necessarily amp up the Molossian experience. I think there's a fine line between a fun amount of involvement and drudgery.

Oh, and no. He doesn't "pay taxes." He pays "foreign aid."

 • If you deiced to make the trip out, 1.) make sure he knows you're coming and 2.) maybe don't use Apple Maps. It brought me to one of their neighbor's houses. This is the Google Maps satellite view of The Republic of Molossia. Some might call it, the poor man's aerial photograph. The micronation is surrounded by the Baugh's neighbors -- all U.S. citizens I assume -- and the small desert town of Dayton, Nevada. It's a little less than an hour drive from Reno or, as molossia.org advises in the Klonitz measurement system, it's "over forty-eight Imperial Nortons ( 48 km / 30 mi) from the nearest airport and eleven Imperial Nortons (11 km / 7 mi) from the nearest hotel accommodations and restaurants." I wouldn't say Molossia is in the middle of nowhere -- I totally stopped for some Starbucks off Route 40 -- but nowhere is right around the corner.

I spent the day at this tiny country Monday, August 12, 2013 XXXVI (the roman numeral extension signifies how long Molossia has existed, and it's how Molossians write the date).
His California-based micronation, also known as Provisional Territories of the F.A.R.T. has 224 Citizens (88 Persons, 35 Pigeons, 35 Fish, 28 Dogs, 12 Chickens, 11 Cats, 5 Goats, 2 Sheep, 2 Hamsters, 2 Rats, 2 Cardboard Cutouts, 1 Snake, 1 Pet Rock).

 • Atlanta, Georgia - June 25, 2017: Princess Olivia Pam (Olivier Martinez) of the Principality of Aigues-Mortes, jumps on her hotel bed at the Hilton Atlanta Perimeter Suites during MicroCon 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, Sunday, June 25, 2017.
"The Principality of Aigues-Mortes" is an established French non-profit, which promotes endeavors in the actual town Aigues-Mortes in the South of France.

Princess Olivia Pam is the alter ego of Chancellor Olivier de Constance (Olivier Martinez). He insists Princess Olivia is not a drag queen, nor even a drag princess. Rather she is a character meant to satirize what's expected of actual princesses. "She Is not pretty and is a drunk." But she also seems to be the spirit of the Principality and was definitely the center of attention at MicroCon 2017.
"Serving Molossia for over a 10th of a century," The Molossian Railroad was built in March, 2000 XXIII and completely rerouted in 2003. I'm not sure to what extent President Baugh is a model train enthusiast. Although I think the kind of pragmatic zeal super serious model train enthusiasts have for their hobbies is a really good analogy to the kind of dedication President Baugh has for Molossia. Rather than building train sets, he builds a country …and incorporates a pretty serious train set at the same time. Don't forget about the model rocket launches, too. …sounds like some serious nerdy dad territory to me. RAD!!!!!
