• Hollywood, California - April 10, 2015: A man strikes a common pose in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre, kneeling on all fours, matching his hands with a celebrity's handprint. What's not very common on the Hollywood Walk of fame are the Micronationalists, clad in full regalia touring the famous tinsel town strip. Pictured are The Republic of Molossia Commodore Jonathan Miller, his wife Katie Miller, both from Indiana and Grand Duke Travis of WestArctica, and CalSahara.
• Hollywood, California - April 10, 2015: Grand Duke Travis of WestArctica stops for a portrait during a pre-MicroCon 2015 tour of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Friday April 10, 2015.

The claimed territory of WestArctica is the Marie Byrd Land of Antarctica, which is 1/8th of the continent. Last year Grand Duke Travis (Travis McHenry) registered WestArctica as a non-profit. It’s mission is to bring attention to climate change's impact on Antarctica's ice sheets and advocate for the local penguin population. Grand Duke Travis founded WestArctica November 2, 2001 while he was in the Navy as an Intelligence Specialist. His advocacy work with WestArctica led him to speak with dignitaries from other countries. The Navy found out, and gave him an ultimatum. So, his work with WestArctica took a backseat until he was honorably discharged in 2008. Since then he established a second micronation, Calsahara. It's a swath of land in the high plains of the California Valley, which his ex-wife’s family owns. After Travis came out as gay, he and his wife divorced. While Travis and his ex-wife remain on good terms, according to Travis, her family is not interested in handing over their land to Travis. He did, however, name their son Nicholas, King of CalSahara, and Travis is CalSahara's "Dictator for Life."
The original territory was an uninhabited island near his home, named Ballinger -- after the lake surrounding it. Unfortunately, A BBQ fire (unrelated to Überstadt) has made venturing on to the small, peaty, flammable island illegal. Now Überstadt's territory is Rosewood "...which is my family's residential property."
Legislation is made through Parliament which is a direct body. Überstadt is a direct democracy. All 5 citizens participate, Four of which live at Rosewood.
• 6/28/14 7:29:14 PM -- Baltimore, MD -- Members of The Fort McHenry Guard walk by the cannons after the ceremonial firing of the evening cannon. The "Roar of the Drums" Fife and Drum Tattoo Ceremony concludes as a 30x42 foot Star Spangled Banner flag is lowered while a bugler plays Taps. 2014 is the 200th anniversary of Francis Scott Key's Star Spangled Banner. He wrote the poem while on a British ship during the battle of Baltimore in the war of 1812. On the eve of the Fourth of July, we use this anniversary to talk about the meaning of the national anthem in 2014 as the nation winds down the second of two unpopular wars amid fears that much of the Middle East is being lost to bloodthirsty terrorist groups. -- Photo by Matt Roth, Freelance
